Expedia, the world’s largest online travel company by revenue, expects to at least double its business in India over the next three to five years. The United States-headquartered company, which entered India in 2008-09, sees India as one of the top three markets in terms of growth and size in Asia. In India, Expedia’s revenue is more skewed towards hotels than in the US. With only 15-17 per cent of overall hotel bookings in the market happening online, may be seen a huge opportunity in this segment,It receives almost half of its traffic through mobile medium.
Expedia has been on an acquisition spree in the past few years and has bought out the likes of Orbitz, Wotif and Travelocity to grow customer base. The firm is open to acquisitions in India based on the opportunities that arise. In a market dominated by domestic travel portals such as MakeMyTrip, Yatra and Goibibo, Expedia is working to strengthen its brand in the country.
